Common questions about government copywriting
What does a government copywriter actually do?
A government copywriter turns complex policy, legislative, technical and program information into content people can understand and use. That can include websites, service information, reports, guides, campaigns, stakeholder communications and internal content.
Our work often begins before the writing. We audit and organise existing information, identify gaps and duplication, develop the content strategy and information architecture, and determine what users need on each page.
Can you manage large and complex government websites?
Yes. Antelope Media led the content transformation behind Buy.NSW, working from an existing estate of more than 1,600 source pages and 1,100 accordions. We audited and mapped the material, developed an audience-led information architecture and restructured and wrote the launch content around what government buyers and suppliers needed to do.
We can lead the complete content workstream or work alongside your digital, design, communications and development teams.
How do you simplify government content without losing accuracy?
Plain English is not simply shorter writing. We first understand the policy, legislation, process and operational requirements. We then organise the information around the questions users need answered, while retaining the qualifications, definitions and technical detail that protect accuracy.
For Revenue NSW, for example, we restructured legislated information about taxes, duties, levies and royalties using a plain-English “What you need to know” structure that provided immediate answers without removing necessary detail.
Can you work with subject-matter experts and multiple stakeholders?
Yes. It is central to our work. We interview subject-matter experts, reconcile different views, explain the reasoning behind structural and editorial decisions and guide content through consultation, review and approval.
We understand that government content must satisfy policy owners, legal teams, communications teams, service teams and senior decision-makers while still working for the public.
Are you an approved NSW Government supplier?
Antelope Media is a prequalified NSW Government supplier under the Advertising and Digital Communications Services Scheme (SCM2701). We can also work through existing agency panels and procurement arrangements where required.
Can you work with confidential or sensitive government information?
Yes. Confidentiality is assumed, and we are happy to sign an NDA and follow your agency’s security, information-handling and approval requirements. We use AI only where it is appropriate and authorised; sensitive or confidential information is never entered into public AI tools.
How much does a government content project cost, and how long does it take?
We generally work on a fixed-fee basis, with the scope, deliverables, review process and timing agreed before work begins. Smaller writing and rewriting projects may take one to two weeks. Content strategies, audits and major website projects are scoped according to the volume of material, stakeholder requirements and approval process.
If you have a deadline or procurement limit, we can design the engagement around it.
