CASE STUDY · EDUCATION AND LEGALTurning Monash Law’s expertise into influence across the legal profession and beyond
Antelope Media developed institutional positioning, postgraduate website content and research-centre messaging strategies across Monash Law School, helping its expertise connect with students, industry, policymakers, partners, donors and the wider legal profession.
The challenge
Monash Law School combined globally recognised teaching and research with clinical legal education, technological innovation, industry partnerships and a strong commitment to improving access to justice.
Its postgraduate programs offered rigorous and flexible pathways for experienced lawyers and other professionals. Meanwhile, its research centres were addressing issues ranging from the future of legal services to the abolition of the death penalty globally.
However, institutional and academic expertise does not automatically translate into persuasive communication.
Prospective students needed to understand how postgraduate study could advance their careers. Industry partners needed to see opportunities for meaningful collaboration. Policymakers, journalists and legal professionals needed to grasp the practical importance of the Law School’s research. Philanthropists and potential partners needed compelling reasons to support its justice initiatives.
Each audience required a distinct proposition, but every communication still needed to reflect the authority, substance and ambition of Monash Law.
Our role
Antelope Media worked across several major Monash Law initiatives, providing positioning, messaging strategy, content strategy and copywriting.
Our work included:
- developing the content for a major Monash Law capability statement
- positioning the Law School for industry partners and collaborators
- developing messaging and website content for the Master of Laws
- developing the proposition and website content for the Master of Legal Studies
- writing a dedicated Master of Laws brochure
- creating a messaging and content strategy for Eleos Justice
- creating a messaging and content strategy for the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation
- identifying priority audiences, messages and content opportunities, and
- translating complex academic and legal subject matter into accessible communication.
Although the individual assignments served different purposes, the underlying task was consistent: making Monash Law’s expertise relevant, distinctive and valuable to the people it wanted to reach.
Positioning Monash Law for industry
Antelope Media developed the content for a substantial capability statement presenting Monash Law to potential industry partners.
The document brought together the Law School’s educational, research and social-impact credentials within one coherent proposition.
It positioned Monash Law as a progressive, internationally connected and technologically advanced law school that combined academic excellence with practical legal education and meaningful engagement with industry and the community.
The content showcased:
- clinical legal education and guaranteed practical experience
- partnerships with courts, firms, government bodies and community organisations
- advanced facilities and courtroom technology
- research expertise and impact
- innovation in legal education
- international connections
- graduate employability, and
- opportunities for industry collaboration.
Rather than presenting these as disconnected institutional achievements, we connected them through a forward-looking narrative about preparing students, the legal profession and the justice system for the future.
The finished capability statement also demonstrated the value of this approach within Monash. After seeing the collateral, another part of the university approached Antelope Media about working with them.
Reframing postgraduate legal education
Monash Law also engaged Antelope Media to develop messaging and content for the Master of Laws and Master of Legal Studies.
For the Master of Laws, we created a structured suite of website content covering the overall program, the benefits of studying at Monash, flexible study options, specialisations, individual units, studying in Melbourne and practical course information.
We positioned the degree as more than another legal qualification. The central proposition focused on helping experienced lawyers deepen their expertise, respond to changes affecting the profession and take the next step in their careers.
The Master of Legal Studies required a different proposition. It was designed for professionals without a law degree who needed a sophisticated understanding of the legal and regulatory environments in which organisations operate.
We connected legal knowledge directly to leadership, commercial judgement and better decision-making. This gave the program a distinct reason to exist rather than presenting it as a lesser version of a law degree.
Antelope Media also wrote a dedicated six-page Master of Laws brochure, adapting the broader program proposition into a focused recruitment journey.
Giving Eleos Justice a more powerful voice
Eleos Justice brings together research, advocacy and education to support the abolition of the death penalty, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region.
Its existing communication explained its activities but did not always convey the urgency of the issue or give potential supporters a compelling reason to act.
Antelope Media developed a comprehensive messaging and content strategy designed to:
- increase awareness of Eleos Justice and its work
- explain why that work was important and urgent
- attract philanthropic support, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region
- develop partnerships with researchers, advocates and other organisations, and
- make its academic work accessible to audiences outside the university.
The strategy identified philanthropists, Monash alumni, researchers and potential partner organisations as distinct audiences with different motivations, concerns and barriers.
It established an overarching narrative, supporting messages, tone of voice, audience propositions, content pillars and practical recommendations for reaching each audience.
A central recommendation was to combine intellectual rigour with human stories. Research and statistics established authority, but the experiences of people affected by capital punishment revealed what was genuinely at stake.
We recommended building content around specific research, campaigns, data, factsheets and real-life cases. This would give Eleos Justice a stronger platform for informing audiences, changing attitudes and showing potential supporters how they could help.
Turning ACJI’s research into public influence
The Australian Centre for Justice Innovation conducted detailed research into access to justice, dispute resolution, legal technology, procedural reform and the future of legal services.
Its work had direct implications for policymakers, the legal profession and society, but its public content did not always make that relevance immediately apparent.
Antelope Media developed a messaging and content strategy to help ACJI raise its profile, differentiate its research and attract greater support and collaboration.
The strategy included:
- analysis of ACJI’s existing content and positioning
- identification of its principal competitive advantages
- audience-specific messaging for academics, partners, policymakers, media and the legal profession
- an overarching proposition and supporting messages
- tone-of-voice guidance
- recommended content formats and distribution channels
- content pillars and editorial rules, and
- practical ideas for articles, videos, data products and media content.
The strategy positioned ACJI around the quality, substance and practical relevance of its research.
We recommended a more journalistic approach that addressed the “so what” immediately. This meant turning complex findings into accessible stories without compromising their academic integrity.
The content approach also created opportunities for ACJI to own important conversations about access to justice, legal technology and the changing profession by publishing authoritative research in forms policymakers, practitioners, journalists and the wider public could readily understand and use.
Building different propositions from one institutional brand
The work could not rely on one generic Monash Law message.
Industry partners were interested in practical education, research capability, talent and opportunities to collaborate. Prospective students wanted to understand the career value of postgraduate study. Eleos Justice needed to create urgency, empathy and a reason to support abolition. ACJI needed to demonstrate the reliability, relevance and influence of its research.
Antelope Media developed a distinct argument for each initiative while retaining the qualities they shared: academic rigour, practical impact, progressive thinking and the authority of Monash University.
This allowed each part of the Law School to communicate in a way that made sense to its own audiences without losing its connection to the wider institution.

The result
Monash Law gained a clearer and more versatile way to communicate its value across several distinct areas of activity.
The capability statement connected its teaching, facilities, research, social mission and industry engagement through one forward-looking institutional story.
The postgraduate content gave two different degrees their own compelling propositions, helping prospective students understand not only what they could study but why it mattered to their careers.
The Eleos Justice strategy connected rigorous research with the human consequences of capital punishment, creating a stronger foundation for advocacy, partnerships and philanthropic support.
The ACJI strategy showed how authoritative academic research could become accessible public content capable of influencing policy, professional practice and wider debate.
Together, the work helped Monash Law communicate beyond the university without diluting the substance, seriousness or complexity of what it does.
For Antelope Media, the engagements demonstrated our ability to work across an institution, understand the different value held within it and turn that expertise into clear, audience-specific propositions.
Is valuable expertise getting lost in institutional language?
We develop the positioning, messaging and content that connect complex expertise with the audiences who need to understand it.
