Government content often makes perfect sense inside government.

Everyone else has to work out what it means.

Too often government agencies and department explain their policies, programs and services through legislation, internal responsibilities and their own organisational structure.

But the people and businesses using that information usually have much simpler questions: Does this apply to me? What do I need to know? What do I need to do next? And why should I care at all?

And if the answer to those questions isn't obvious, trust quickly disappears.

But while plain English is usually part of the solution, changing the words alone isn’t enough. Developing and writing government content is also about working out what information belongs where and in what format. It's about balancing and reconciling competing stakeholder requirements. And it's about creating a structure that works for the user without sacrificing legal, technical or policy accuracy.

That’s the government content work we do: turning organisational complexity into information people can understand, trust and act on.

What makes our government copywriters different

We make complex government information usable.

We solve the structure before we write the words

Government content problems are rarely just writing problems. We audit, map and restructure complex information estates so policies, programs and services are organised around what people need to understand and do.

Every engagement is senior-led

You work directly with experienced content strategists and writers: no juniors and no account managers. We work confidently with subject-matter experts, content owners, digital teams and senior stakeholders to reach clear, defensible content decisions.

We preserve accuracy while improving clarity

Government content cannot be simplified until it becomes wrong. We make legislative, policy and technical information easier to understand without losing the qualifications, obligations or detail people need to make informed decisions.

How a government copywriting engagement runs

We work within your governance and approval processes while keeping the content moving towards a clear, usable outcome.

Brief and scope

We clarify the audiences, deliverables, stakeholders, source material, timeframes and approval process. You receive a defined scope and fixed fee before work begins.

Audit and immersion

We examine the existing content, policies and supporting material, interview the right people and identify duplication, gaps, conflicts and structural problems.

Strategy and structure

Before rewriting, we determine what each audience needs, where the information belongs and how the content should work together across the service or website.

Writing and consultation

Senior writers develop the content in plain English while preserving its policy, legislative and technical accuracy. We work directly with subject-matter experts to resolve questions.

Review and implementation

We guide the content through stakeholder review, reconcile feedback and deliver approved copy that is structured and ready for your website, publication or campaign.

Antelope Media can work directly with your team or alongside an appointed digital, design or communications agency. We offer fixed fees, welcome confidentiality requirements and can work within government panels, procurement processes and accessibility standards.

Common questions about government copywriting

What does a government copywriter actually do?

A government copywriter turns complex policy, legislative, technical and program information into content people can understand and use. That can include websites, service information, reports, guides, campaigns, stakeholder communications and internal content.

Our work often begins before the writing. We audit and organise existing information, identify gaps and duplication, develop the content strategy and information architecture, and determine what users need on each page.

Can you manage large and complex government websites?

Yes. Antelope Media led the content transformation behind Buy.NSW, working from an existing estate of more than 1,600 source pages and 1,100 accordions. We audited and mapped the material, developed an audience-led information architecture and restructured and wrote the launch content around what government buyers and suppliers needed to do.

We can lead the complete content workstream or work alongside your digital, design, communications and development teams.

How do you simplify government content without losing accuracy?

Plain English is not simply shorter writing. We first understand the policy, legislation, process and operational requirements. We then organise the information around the questions users need answered, while retaining the qualifications, definitions and technical detail that protect accuracy.

For Revenue NSW, for example, we restructured legislated information about taxes, duties, levies and royalties using a plain-English “What you need to know” structure that provided immediate answers without removing necessary detail.

Can you work with subject-matter experts and multiple stakeholders?

Yes. It is central to our work. We interview subject-matter experts, reconcile different views, explain the reasoning behind structural and editorial decisions and guide content through consultation, review and approval.

We understand that government content must satisfy policy owners, legal teams, communications teams, service teams and senior decision-makers while still working for the public.

Are you an approved NSW Government supplier?

Antelope Media is a prequalified NSW Government supplier under the Advertising and Digital Communications Services Scheme (SCM2701). We can also work through existing agency panels and procurement arrangements where required.

Can you work with confidential or sensitive government information?

Yes. Confidentiality is assumed, and we are happy to sign an NDA and follow your agency’s security, information-handling and approval requirements. We use AI only where it is appropriate and authorised; sensitive or confidential information is never entered into public AI tools.

How much does a government content project cost, and how long does it take?

We generally work on a fixed-fee basis, with the scope, deliverables, review process and timing agreed before work begins. Smaller writing and rewriting projects may take one to two weeks. Content strategies, audits and major website projects are scoped according to the volume of material, stakeholder requirements and approval process.

If you have a deadline or procurement limit, we can design the engagement around it.
