Making the capital behind the energy transition understandable

Antelope Media interviewed Macquarie Capital specialists and developed authoritative thought leadership explaining how finance, infrastructure and emerging technologies were accelerating the global energy transition.

The challenge

Macquarie Capital operates at the intersection of capital, infrastructure, technology - funding and advising on and some of the most consequential changes taking place in the global economy.

The clean energy transition was creating substantial new opportunities, but explaining those opportunities was rarely straightforward.

Renewable-energy projects depended on sophisticated financing structures, changing technologies, evolving energy markets and cooperation between investors, developers, governments and large corporate energy users.

Macquarie Capital had extensive specialist knowledge across these areas. The communication challenge was to turn that expertise into clear and compelling thought leadership for investors, infrastructure leaders, businesses, policymakers and other sophisticated readers.

The content needed to remain technically and commercially credible, while revealing the larger story behind individual technologies, projects and financial structures.

Our role

Antelope Media has worked with Macquarie Capital over several years to develop interview and research-led thought leadership around renewable energy, decarbonisation, infrastructure finance and emerging technologies.

Our role has involved examining the source material, researching the wider market, identifying the strongest stories, interrogating technical and finance experts and connecting several specialist perspectives within a coherent argument. This has required the ability to quickly understand a topic and the issues to the level where we can interview and write about highly technical issues, while adapting and refining our thinking based on SME's input.

Our work has included:

  • planning thought-leadership articles with Macquarie Capital’s communications and investment-banking teams
  • researching renewable-energy markets, technologies and financing models
  • interviewing senior specialists across finance, infrastructure, energy and technology
  • identifying the central proposition and narrative for each article
  • developing article structures before and after the interviews
  • translating technical financial concepts for broader business audiences
  • connecting transactions and projects with larger market developments
  • integrating research, data and practical examples
  • responding to detailed technical and editorial reviews
  • supplying supporting references and sources, and
  • refining content through Macquarie Capital’s approval processes.

Some of the key articles and issues we've covered are set out below

Explaining how infrastructure finance re-energised the market

One of the most substantial projects examined how the financing of Australian renewable-energy infrastructure had evolved as the market matured.

Antelope Media began with a planning session involving Macquarie Capital specialists, then conducted detailed interviews with members of its infrastructure and energy team.

We researched the market, developed the central angle and structured the article around an important development: renewable infrastructure was no longer being financed only as a collection of isolated projects.

As developers assembled larger and more diverse portfolios, new financing structures allowed capital to be deployed across multiple assets, technologies and stages of development. These structures could spread risk, provide greater flexibility and help established renewable-energy businesses continue scaling.

The article used examples including CWP and FRV to show how portfolio financing worked in practice and what it revealed about the development of Australia’s renewable-energy market.

The resulting article, How Infrastructure Finance Re-energised Australia’s Energy Transition, was developed for an Infrastructure Partnerships Australia audience.

Showing how businesses could accelerate decarbonisation

Another infrastructure-finance article built on an earlier body of work examining how capital, technology and corporate demand were combining to accelerate the energy transition.

For this major feature about how Australian businesses could decarbonise, Antelope Media interviewed specialists from across Macquarie Capital.

The interviews explored:

  • corporate decarbonisation strategies
  • clean electrification
  • renewable-energy infrastructure
  • power purchase agreements
  • capital raising for energy projects
  • the Murra Warra wind farm
  • BOC and renewable industrial gases
  • hydrogen hubs
  • emerging energy technologies, and
  • the wider pathway to net zero.

We brought these perspectives together within one integrated article about the role businesses could play in stimulating demand, supporting investment and helping Australia realise its renewable-energy potential.

The resulting feature was titled Clean electrification: how Australia can unleash its renewable energy potential.

Connecting regional developments with global change

Antelope Media also developed thought leadership examining the different ways energy transition was unfolding across international markets.

One article considered the distinct pathways to decarbonisation emerging across Latin America. It connected regional differences, energy resources, infrastructure needs and policy settings with the investment opportunities being created: Bridging expertise and capital to meet Latin America's growing need for infrastructure

Another explored renewable-energy markets across Asia. The project began with a narrow geographic focus centred on developments in Vietnam, but developed into a broader regional story as the research and review process revealed stronger opportunities elsewhere.

We reshaped the article, reduced its initial emphasis on Vietnam and expanded its examination of Korea, including the growth of offshore wind: How renewable energy could accelerate Asia's green future

We also produced content about Japanese companies bringing experience gained in international renewable-energy markets back to Japan. The article explored changing investor attitudes and the role experienced energy businesses could play in Japan’s transition.

Across these assignments, our role was to identify what was distinctive about each market and why it mattered to investors, businesses and the broader energy transition.

Exploring the technologies enabling the transition

The work also extended beyond renewable generation to the technologies, infrastructure and financing models needed to support a lower-emissions economy.

Antelope Media interviewed Macquarie Capital specialists for articles examining hydrogen electrolysers, battery storage, distributed energy, virtual power plants, electric-vehicle charging and the changing future of transport. Our work included Emerging opportunities for hydrogen and its enabling technologies, The changing face of Australian transport infrastructure and A transport revolution: The trends set to change the way we commute, send goods and live

On each occasion, we turned highly technical material into accessible narratives about how these technologies worked, the commercial opportunities they created and the role of investment in bringing them to scale.

Individual companies and projects provided tangible examples, while the articles connected them with wider changes in energy systems, infrastructure, consumer behaviour and capital markets.

Working with specialist expertise

Interview-led thought leadership depends on asking the right questions.

Macquarie Capital’s specialists understood their markets in considerable depth, but the most valuable article did not always emerge from the first description of a project or transaction.

Antelope Media prepared for interviews by reviewing background material, studying the relevant markets and identifying the questions most likely to reveal the wider significance of the subject.

We then tested ideas, followed technical explanations through to their practical consequences and looked for connections between individual perspectives.

The writing process involved substantial synthesis. Contributions from people working in finance, infrastructure, technology and corporate strategy had to become one clear narrative rather than a collection of expert observations.

What we delivered

  • interview-led thought leadership for Macquarie Capital’s global content program
  • thought leadership developed for Infrastructure Partnerships Australia
  • research into renewable-energy markets, infrastructure and technologies
  • interviews with senior Macquarie Capital specialists
  • article concepts, propositions and narrative structures
  • content about renewable-infrastructure financing
  • content about corporate decarbonisation and clean electrification
  • content about power purchase agreements and renewable industrial projects
  • content examining hydrogen and other emerging technologies
  • regional energy-transition content covering Australia, Asia, Japan and Latin America
  • case studies involving renewable-energy projects and businesses
  • translation of technical financial concepts into accessible business writing
  • supporting evidence, data and source material, and
  • editorial refinement through detailed technical and stakeholder review.

The result

Macquarie Capital gained a substantial body of authoritative content explaining the financial, technological and commercial forces shaping the energy transition globally.

The articles converted specialist expertise into coherent market narratives. They helped sophisticated readers understand not only how particular projects and financing structures worked, but also why those developments mattered.

Antelope Media’s work has made complex subjects accessible while retaining the technical credibility required of a leading global financial organisation.

The continuing relationship, spanning numerous specialists, subjects and international markets, demonstrated Macquarie Capital’s confidence in our ability to understand demanding subject matter, interview experts effectively and find the larger story within the detail.
